with Monica Dengo
Monica Dengo is a highly accomplished and internationally recognized calligrapher, teacher, and graphic designer. She was born in Italy in 1966, studied graphic design at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, and studied calligraphy and bookbinding at the Roehampton Institute in London with Gaynor Goffe. She deepened her knowledge by studying medieval illumination, miniature painting and design with Thomas Ingmire and figure drawing with Eleanor Dickinson in San Francisco. Since 1993 she has worked as a teacher, a commercial calligrapher, and a fine artist. Currently, she teaches at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and is working on a calligraphy book for children. Her work is shown in many galleries, and you can see several recent works at the following site: www.catalog.com/gallery/gallery.html. Susan Richardson will bring a scrap book with representative samples to the next general meeting.
In every writing system the continuous cultivation of scripts lead to the development of cursive. Alongside formal, highly legible scripts, we can always find examples of much more dynamic, personal and individual handwriting used for everyday work. All these historic writings should inspire the calligrapher towards the development of new, artistic handwriting where movement and emotion are emphasized through the flowing energy of the letters and the blank spaces in between.
This course’s aim will be to push the boundaries of handwriting and develop new, invented writings by exploring the connections between writing and speech, writing and sound, writing and rhythm, writing and ritual, writing and emotions. The workshop offers an opportunity to engage in extended study with an exceptional talent. There are four full-day sessions, one each month beginning in February, 2002. This allows students to work and develop projects in between class sessions, a format that contributes to internalizing and personalizing the concepts and skills that were covered in class. This should be an experience that will open you up as an artist in new and wonderful ways
